This was the first time my work made a media splash! My friend Dick Wiegand and I published a paper in Biodiversity and Conservation that showed a decline of nearly all Orchid species in Fredrick County, MD due to deer herbivory. The work was featured on the front page of the Baltimore Sun. This was Dick’s legacy in many ways. He spent 41+ years searching for and counting the orchids at a staggering number of sites in Frederick Co. If not for his dedication, this loss could only have been speculated.
